Meg Whitman, 2010. (AP/Chris Carlson) Money can't buy you love -- or even a Senate seat. So think really carefully before plunking down your own money. Dan Eggen reports that eight of the 10 biggest self-funders this year lost their races, and isn't that often the case? For every Bloomberg or Schwarzenegger, there are a few more like Ross Perot ($63 million in 1992 -- that was a lot then!) or this year's bank-account drainer Meg Whitman ($175 million... Jokes one GOP consultant: "I could have lost that race for only $80 million!"). This was the first year that lady millionaires have gotten into politics in a big way; Jason Horowitz examines what went wrong for them.
