Panel: Deny NYC Mayor's Choice For Schools (Yahoo! / AP)
An advisory panel appointed to weigh the qualifications of Hearst Magazines chairwoman Cathie Black to head New York City schools recommended Tuesday denying a waiver that would allow the noneducator to serve as chancellor of the country's largest school system. State education commissioner David Steiner is not required to follow the panel's advice in deciding whether to grant the waiver, nor is he required to consider public opinion.
The Financial Times Has Become Hostile To Bloggers (Talking Biz News)
Reuters blogger Felix Salmon doesn't like the new warning that appears when someone copies text from a Financial Times article to use on a blog or other online venue. Salmon writes, "Hilariously, even the FT's own journalists are falling foul of this idiocy: On Thursday, in his Markets Live conversation, Neil Hume wound up pasting text onto the FT's Web site saying that he was infringing the FT's copyright. 'Sorry,' he then added. 'Damn disclaimer.'"
Bowlmor Puts Useless Newspaper Building To Good Use (Gothamist)
The new Bowlmor Times Square opened yesterday in the old New York Times building on West 44th Street. You'll recall that the paper of record sold the building in 2007 and moved to its flashy new headquarters in a 52-story skyscraper, which the company had to then mortgage off to cover spiraling debt.
