Karina Smirnoff, Nelly, Joanna Garcia Reminisce On 'When I Was 17'

Stars remember fake teeth and bad kisses on latest episode.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Nelly on "When I Was 17"

Karina Smirnoff is known for her powerhouse ballroom moves on "Dancing With the Stars," but when she was younger, her wardrobe sometimes stole the spotlight on the dance floor.

As a teen, the Russian dancer made the rounds at local restaurants hungry for entertainment. On the latest episode of "When I Was 17," Smirnoff remembered a performance where she forgot to swap out her granny panties for full-coverage boy shorts.
"Every time I would do a turn, you could see these multicolored polka dot underwear. The audience went crazy, they're like screaming, clapping and I was thinking, 'Wow, they really like the dance ... this is cool,' " she recalled. One of Smirnoff's fellow dancers eventually let her know what the audience's reaction was really about. "But the other couple, the girl, pulled me aside, she goes like, 'Change your underwear. You're still in your underwear!' "
Like Smirnoff, St. Louis rapper Nelly also had a way of getting money when he was 17. Unlike Smirnoff, his income was based solely on luck.
"We used to shoot dice in the band room, in the bathroom. If there was a crap game, I was getting out of class to attend that crap game," he said. "This is how I got money for the new J's [Jordans] that was coming out; this is how I got my lunch money. This is how I ate."
The budding MC was also into gold teeth but couldn't afford the genuine article. However, when he scored a big win he knew exactly where to spend his cash.
"I won that 120 bucks and I was like, 'I'm gonna get a real one now,' " he said. "So I went and I got a real one."
Similar to Nelly's obsession with gold fronts, "Reba" actress Joanna Garcia was dreaming of one thing when she was 17. The object of her desire was hunky fellow actor James Marsden.
"I was still on [Nickelodeon's] 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?' and doing other shows here and there," Garcia recalled. "I did a show called 'Second Noah,' which Jimmy Marsden was my first onscreen kiss. I was hired for the job, and I thought, 'Wow, this guy is dreamy.' "
However, the smooch ultimately wasn't the romantic occasion she had in mind.
"I think it was really embarrassing and weird for him because I was the age of his, like, little sister," she said. "My mom was there. It was the worst possible scenario you could ever imagine. I was terrified."
"When I Was 17" airs Saturdays at 11 a.m. on MTV

Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert's 'River' Won't Flow to Radio

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert's new duet, 'Draggin' the River,' from Blake's 'All About Tonight' album, chronicles a couple's plan to elope after the bride's father refuses his blessing for their marriage. "This here is our love story," Blake sings on the track, which unfortunately has no chance of being a single.

"It won't be released to radio," Blake tells The Boot. "What sucks is that she and I would love for it to be released to radio. We've even talked about even doing a video for it."

Blake's label is Warner Music Nashville, while Miranda is on Columbia Records, which causes some conflict in working together. "The way it ends up working out with the record companies trying to time singles for her and for me," Blake explains, "it just ends up not working timing wise. It's not the first or the last time something like that's gonna happen. We don't let it stop us from writing or recording together."

At celeb-kid-filled Washington Horse Show, daughter of Lou Dobbs jumps past questions

Hillary Dobbs riding Marengo. (Diana De Rosa) An unlikely place to stargaze in D.C.: this week's Washington International Horse Show at Verizon Center. The annual event, one of the few held in a major city, attracts top riders from around the world -- including a few with very famous parents who show up to support their kids. As a general rule, the VIP parents try to stay in the background: They sit in the stands like everyone else, trying to deflect attention from themselves to their children. In past years, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, and Bob and Sheila Johnson were spotted peering in the ring because their daughters -- Jessica, Destry and Paige -- are all accomplished equestrians with lots of ribbons and prizes. Alas, none of them is competing at the show this year. This year's standouts include Georgina Bloomberg, the younger

Kid Rock Thinks New 'Idol' Judge Steven Tyler Needs 'Counseling'

With Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi all having left the show, their replacements, singer/actress Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler are generating plenty of buzz. But at least one fellow entertainer thinks the addition of one of the new judges is a big mistake.

"I think it's the stupidest thing [Steven's] ever done in his life," Kid Rock tells Entertainment Weekly. "He's a sacred American institution of rock 'n' roll, and he just threw it all out the window. Just stomped on it and set it on fire."

NBC Developing Comedy With Jeff Lowell

After a decade in features, Spin City writer-producer Jeff Lowell is returning to television with a single-camera comedy at NBC produced by ABC Studios and Brillstein Entertainment. The untitled project, which has received a script order, is a romantic comedy about a couple from the point of view of the man and the woman whose unspoken thoughts we can hear via voiceover. "It's a little bit like the balcony scene from Annie Hall," Lowell said, adding that he got the idea for the project from reflecting on his relationship with his wife --together since theywere 15-years-old. "The secret to happiness and a strong marriage is unexpressed thoughts," he said. Lowell and his family left Hollywood after his short stint on NBC's Inside Schwartz in 2001 and moved to Charlottesville, VA. He started writing movies and has had 3 produced: John Tucker Must Die, Over Her Dead Body and Hotel for Dogs."I never thought I'd go back but I started missing television," UTA-repped Lowell said.

Ryan Kwanten Will Tap Into His 'Dark Sides' To Play Charles Manson

'True Blood' actor will star in 'The Family' movie.By Amy Wilkinson

Ryan Kwanten

Photo: MTV News

A charismatic cold-blooded killer is a far cry from the dim-witted yet endearing country bumpkin Ryan Kwanten portrays on the sexy HBO series "True Blood" — but the Australian actor is taking on the challenge.
Kwanten has signed on to play Charles Manson, one of America's most notorious criminals, in the movie "The Family." Kwanten announced the news during a press conference for his Western, "Red Hill," TheWrap.com first reported.

Written and directed by "The Machinist" scribe Scott Kosar, "The Family" follows Manson during the late 1960s, when he instructed his acolytes to commit several murders, including, most famously, the slaying of actress Sharon Tate in 1969. Manson has spent nearly four decades in prison.
When MTV News spoke with Kwanten this week, he admitted the role will be a massive undertaking. "It's going to be quite a challenge," he said. "[Manson] is undoubtedly a huge iconic figure and not necessarily for the best of deeds."
Though Kwanten is no stranger to bloodstained killing sprees — he is on "True Blood," after all — the actor said this latest role will require a bit of soul searching.
"It's going to be tapping into sort of dark sides of myself and obviously trying to find out as much as you can and then using what's going to be beneficial in making the film," he explained.
The movie will begin production in 2011 during Kwanten's next "True Blood" hiatus.
"The Family" won't be the first movie to immortalize — or demonize — Manson and his followers. In 1976, CBS aired a two-part television movie called "Helter Skelter," based on a book of the same name by prosecuting attorney Vincent Buliosi and Curt Gentry.
A second TV movie based on the book was made in 2004, and the 2003 film "The Manson Family" also details the group's horrible misdeeds.
Can Ryan Kwanten pull off the role of Charles Manson? Tell us what you think in the comments below!

'Saw 3D' #1 For Halloween: So-So $28M

FRIDAY PM: Sources are giving me these early North American grosses for Friday and estimated weekend and cume. Numbers which will be refined tonight and/or in the morning. Analysis coming:
1. Saw VII 3D(Lionsgate) NEW [2,808 Theaters]
Friday$11M, Estimated Weekend$28M)
A scary Halloween to one and all. You know what frightens me?More Sawpics. This is supposed to be the final chapter of thefranchise that has made $763 million in global box office and $1+ billion in DVD sales. Just as the previous installment was supposed to be the last gasp. And so on. Granted 7 films in 7 years is unprecedented for a franchise, and the Guinness Book Of World Records presented a plaque at Comic-Con naming it the most successful horror series in history. But, please, let it die. This torture porn disgrace needs to end. Friday's anemic number includes$1.7 million from Saw 3D's midnight screenings, which were Lionsgate's largest even though unimpressive. This $28M opening weekend estimate is underwhelming because of 3D's higher ticket prices. The predicted totalputs it behind installments #2-5 (#3 was the biggest with$33.6M) but way ahead of last year's disappointment that got ambushed by Paranormal Activity and debuted to a mere $14M.I heard that Saw 3D was tracking solidly, especially in the important categories: young male/young female and Hispanics, while gaining traction in the African-American market.Produced in association with Twited Pictures for abudget of under $20 million, Hollywood thought the pic could earn ... Jason Aldean Invites You to 'My Kinda Party'

Filed under: Exclusive, Interviews, Country News

Jason Aldean's new album, 'My Kinda Party,' is set for release on Tuesday, November 2, but the Georgia native has already started the party by playing some of the songs from the record during his headlining tour. With a career that's been building steadily since his 2005 debut, Jason says the pressure was off a little bit when he began recording the new disc, but nevertheless he didn't let up.

"The process for recording this album was the same as it's always been -- finding great songs," Jason tells The Boot. 'If you do that, everything else falls into place. We may have tried a few new things but we're not going too far away from what our fans are used to hearing."

Something fans haven't heard from Jason before is a duet, but the new disc delivers one (called 'Don't You Wanna Stay') featuring pop songbird Kelly Clarkson. In all, the new CD includes 15 tunes, which is a higher number than many artists are releasing on an album these days. Jason admits that while labels are trying to figure out how to sell records, it's important to him to give fans the best deal for their hard-earned money.

"I would have recorded more songs before now had we had the opportunity," Jason points out, "but a lot of times the record company is in control of how many songs you put on a record. I think right now, with album sales down, we need to figure out ways for people to buy a complete album. If that means putting 15 songs on a record and keeping them from downloading the single songs on iTunes, then that's the goal."

The Boot hung out with Jason on his farm outside Nashville to get a sneak peek of the new album, to talk about why now was the right time for a duet, and to discover just who it is Jason depends on to take care of many of his business decisions.

As someone who was raised pretty much in rural America, do you focus on those small-town values when you're writing or looking for songs?

I grew up in Georgia, just on the outskirts of Macon, surrounded by a lot of farm land. The way I look at it is, it's not like I was all for the small town in a 'rah rah rah' kind of deal. That's what I know. So for any artist, if you can sing about things you've experienced, you can make it believable. When I hear songs and I can relate to what they lyrics say, I know I can relate the message to our fans. That's how we go about picking our songs for our albums.

Halloween Preview: Exorcisms, Anthony Hopkins And 'The Rite'

Hopkins plays a priest in the supernatural drama, which comes out January 28.By Eric Ditzian

Halloween is almost upon us. What better time to plunge into a world of demon possession, exorcisms and the unsettling feeling that something very freaky is taking place?
That's what "The Rite" is dialing up for audiences come January 28, and MTV News has an exclusive look at the production with a photo of stars Anthony Hopkins and Colin O'Donoghue exorcising a supernatural force.

Yet this is a film that takes a rather agnostic stance on the entire concept, as O'Donoghue told us. "It's more of a psychological drama, more so than horror," he said. "The point of the film is to explore the idea of whether it's a psychological illness or a true possession, trying to take as unbiased a position as possible.
(Check out an exclusive photo from "The Rite")
"There are some moments that will make you jump," he added. "People are bound to be a little freaked out by it."
The 29-year-old Ireland native, who plays a seminary student thrust into the world of the Vatican's exorcism school, is playing his highest-profile role to date. And when O'Donoghue found out he'd be going toe-to-toe with Hopkins — who plays a Roman Catholic priest with rather atypical methods — he was more than a little unsettled.
"To be honest, I freaked out a little bit," he laughed.
Yet O'Donoghue said that Hopkins immediately made him feel comfortable. "He mentored me when I was struggling to get where I wanted to be in the scene," O'Donoghue said. "He was really patient and we'd run lines together. He'd say, 'At the end of the day, sometimes you just have to let it go and the scene will actually work.' "
The actor also attended actual exorcisms with the assistance of Matt Baglio, who wrote the book on which the movie is based. "The idea of going to them was more frightening than actually being in them," O'Donoghue said. "[Matt] had been to the exorcism school and he knew some exorcists who were willing to let me in, as long as it was okay with the people who were being blessed. Some people were and one woman wasn't and she wanted to close the door. It's a different experience than you expect it to be. It's like going to a therapist. It was fascinating to watch."

Kanye West Reminds Fans Of His Beatmaking Skills

'It's kind of important for people to realize I'm a producer also,' he tells Mixtape Daily.By Jayson Rodriguez

Cornerstone Credentials: Kanye West
We all know Kanye West raps — and sometimes directs short films — but the Chicago superstar wants to make it clear that he's still a problem behind the boards.
'Ye is responsible for some of the most soulful hip-hop tracks of all time, from Beanie Sigel's wailing "Nothing Like It" and Talib Kweli's thunderous "Get By" to Shyne's eerie "More or Less." But, without question, his best work has been with his big brother, Jay-Z — a fact that some people still sleep on, Yeezy said.

"You know what's so bugged?" he said. "I had a friend that didn't realize I produced the last Jay-Z album. Because I'm such a notorious pop character, such a hated guy, or a loved guy, controversial or whatever it is, that people kind of forget that I sit and work hard as hell on beats. I listened to CDs for three days to find the 'Live Fast Die Young' sample, which was 'If This World Were Mine' flipped by the Bar-Kays. And I loved the sample so much that I played it for two days. Just over and over and over, and I thought about it and said, 'Claps. I want handclaps to go with this sample. That's what I need to juxtapose it and not make it just some takeoff of a '94 hip-hop song, but to make it a 2010, 2011, 2012 futuristic version of itself.' And I started the claps and put the 'hey, hey, hey' and the drums, and I just programmed it. It's kind of important for people to realize I'm a producer also."
Next up, Kanye will be wrapping up his forthcoming album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and then producing his and Jay-Z's collaborative project, Watch the Throne.

Linkin Park's Chester Bennington Explains How He Ended Up In 'Saw 3D'

LP bandmate lives next door to 'Saw' producer Mark Burg.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias

Chester Bennington

Photo: MTV News

For the devoted Linkin Park fans out there, it might have come as a surprise to learn that frontman Chester Bennington was trying his hand at acting with a role in "Saw 3D." And while it's not his first film appearance — he had cameos in the two "Crank" films — in "Saw," he plays an actual character named Evan.
When MTV News caught up with Bennington recently, we asked him how he (figuratively) ended up in such a bloody mess.

"It's a funny story. Mark Burg, the producer of the 'Saw' films, he lives next to one of my bandmates in Linkin Park, and when he moved in and they got to meet each other, my bandmate brought up to Mark that I'm a huge fan of the 'Saw' films," Bennington explained. "I've literally, every time they come out, I'm [there on] opening day.
"I love the movies, so [I'm] very enthusiastic about it," Bennington continued. "And so, he was like, 'This is going to be so great. Chester's going to be so stoked that you're my neighbor. He loves the movies.' And from that conversation, Mark then said, 'Well, do you think he'd want to be in one of the movies?' The answer was a 'F--- yeah, are you kidding? I want to do that.' So that's how it evolved, and eventually this role came along and kind of fit."
Bennington added that the 3-D factor upped the action/gore ante a bit — to the point that his wife almost lost it.
"It was really cool," Bennington said of his gory scenes. "At one point, I was filming a part of the scene, and my wife was watching, and we're both huge fans, so we're watching. We've seen all the crazy crap that's happening in all these crazy movies. So, she's watching, and when we're filming this particular scene, she actually almost threw up. So I knew that we were doing something right if it made her want to puke."

'The Rocky Horror Glee Show' Recap: What Rocked, What Didn't

Ryan Murphy must have either been shaking his head or snickering over the past few weeks, as the "Is Rocky Horror too risque for Glee?" and "Is Glee too cookie-cutter for Rocky Horror?" and "What's the point of performing Rocky Horror if you're just going to censor the crap out of it?" discussions ran in circles all over the place (here included).  Maybe he wanted to scream, "That's the whole point!" but then stopped himself, remembering he's often prone to giving too much away. And the episode did a fine job of speaking for him, lobbing loads of meta-criticism at itself for putting on Rocky Horror before we even got the chance to do it. As a critic, that can make my job a little less pitchfork-wielding, mob-leading fun. But as a Glee fan, I was proud of the show's ingenuity and pleased with at least most of its message.  And as a Rocky Horror Picture Show fan, I wasn't writhing on the floor with sacrilege-induced stomach pains. For such an ambitious endeavor (on a prime time high school dramedy, no less) I'd call that a decided win. And for an episode about what's too risque to expose to children, there was still so. Much. Shirtlessness.I'm still trying to figure out the best way to approach my Glee recaps. It's a beast of a show, and there's so much to discuss! For an episode of these epic, complicated proportions, a straight-up list of loves and hates was the simplest way to organize my thoughts:

Full Hearts: 'Friday Night Lights' Returns for Its Final Season

Filed under: Reality-Free, Stay TunedIt's easy to be overtaken by nostalgia when watching the final season of 'Friday Night Lights,' which begins 9PM ET Wednesday on DirecTV's 101 Network (the final season will air on NBC some time next year).

Loyal viewers been through a lot with these people; we have stuck with the show through so many ups and downs. And just as many of its characters this season and last have said their farewells, soon we'll have to say goodbye to Dillon, Texas.

Below are some thoughts on the first few episodes of the show's fifth season. (You may wish to wait until Season 5 airs on NBC to read what's below, but this review shouldn't spoil any major plot developments, for either NBC or DirecTV viewers.) Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Team Meg Whitman Charging Media a Whopping $2,000 for One Day of Travel? (SF Gate)
California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman is charging the media a whopping $1,350 for one day of travel alongside her campaign, and an astronomical $2,050 for another -- hotels not included. And so far, there are no details of what itinerary is planned, with a week to go. Whitman campaign spokeswoman Sarah Pompei, in an email to reporters, gave those figures out with the observation, "We have worked to keep the cost for travel during the day as low as possible."

CEO and president Tom Curley revealed the decline when asked last week about the cooperative's business relationship with its member-owners.

This just in...: Wale offends Fredericksburg with loud, filthy lyrics; TI off the hook for drug charges; Godard skips Oscar ceremony

Wale, 2009. (AP/Jeff Christensen) The president of the University of Mary Washington apologized to campus neighbors for a Saturday outdoor concert by Wale that was not just "extremely loud" but apparently pretty raunchy, the Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star reported. Rick Hurley acknowledged the D.C. rapper's lyrics were "upsetting to those who would not choose to attend a concert of this nature." Los Angeles prosecutors have dropped charges against T.I. in the September drug arrest that sent him back to prison for violating probation, TMZ reported, having decided the amount (four tabs of ecstasy) was too small, and, well, he's going back in anyway. Jean-Luc Godard will not pick up his honorary Academy Award in person next month. The French filmmaker's girlfriend told reporters earlier this fall he was put off that the statuette will no longer be part of the Oscar telecast but rather an off-camera dinner. The academy folks

Luke Bryan Passes on His Musical Genes

Rick Diamond, Getty Images

Luke Bryan may have a bit of competition in the future when it comes to awards and songs battling it out at the top of the charts. His oldest son, Bo, may be following in Daddy's footsteps. Luke is encouraging his son, who turns three in March, to follow whichever direction his dreams lead him, just like the 'Do I' singer's own parents did for him when he was growing up.

Luke, who grew up in the small town of Leesburg, Ga., always had his parents' approval when it came to his music. In fact, they bought him his first guitar at the age of 14, and by the next year, his father was driving him to a local club where he would trade guitar licks and lead vocals with other young singers.

Now it is Luke's turn to show that same support to his own children. Bo is not only mesmerized by his father on stage, but now he's starting to show interest in playing music, as well. "I've got a guitar that used to be pretty nice that Bo drags around the house," Luke says. "We've got the piano, and I sit down at the it and my fingers stick to the keys from popsicles! So, he has tons of music and guitars and stuff like that. My wife and I will be in one room and all of a sudden we'll hear Bo go sit down at the piano unsolicited. I just love it. It used to be a bunch of rattling and now I can hear him in there making some notes."

2011 Indie Spirits Return To Santa Monica

Sanity prevails! The 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards are returning to their familiar Saturday afternoon perch on the beach in Santa Monica. The awards show will be held February 26, starting at 2 PM. It has always been one of the most enjoyable Oscar weekend events, but last year, the organization brought the show to downtown Los Angeles on the Friday before the Oscars. It was an awful idea. Everything that could go wrong did, including problems with the live TV feed. Just as important, Hollywood players were caught between driving all the way downtown or making the must-attend Oscar parties held by WME's Ari Emanuel and CAA's Bryan Lourd. The move back to Saturdays was announced September 1, and hopes ran high that it foreshadowed a return to the beach.
LOS ANGELES (October 26, 2010) ? Justin Bieber To Launch My World Unisex Fragrance

Justin Bieber fans better start saving up now, because the pop star is set on taking over retail stores around the country. In addition to his line of dolls and nail polish, the teen sensation is joining the league of celebrities who have ventured into the fragrance scene with his debut scent called My World.
According to WWD, Bieber is teaming up with Etoile Nation Beauty to create wristbands and dog tags infused with a unisex fragrance. The scent is embedded into the accessories through a patented resin technology that is designed to hold the scent for up to one year. The My World collection will feature four different designs including Icon, Energy, Tour and Web and will hit Wal-Mart stores beginning on Black Friday (November 26).
Bieber told the fashion news service that he's been involved in developing the scent. "They actually brought me a bunch of stuff to smell today," he said. "One of them smelled too young, too fruity. One was really good."
When asked what scents he likes most on the ladies, Justin replied, "I actually like the Britney Spears perfume on girls. It smells good."

Priced at $10, the fragrance is described as having "a combination of top notes of bergamot, lychee and pomegranate, a heart of cedar glimmers and a drydown of musk."
"This Justin Bieber juggernaut is never going to end," Etoile Nation Beauty president Michael Ferrara told WWD. "Justin is a total grassroots phenomenon."
With the affordable cost, Ferrara said that the collection's allure partially resides in the line's easy accessibility "to stack, mix and match, trade and take the scent on the go."
In addition to his fragrance collection, Bieber recently announced via Twitter that he would be releasing his acoustic LP on November 23.
Will you be picking up a Bieber's fragrance-infused wristband or dog tag? Tell us in the comments below!

'Family Guy's Alex Borstein Signs Deal With 20th TV For Live-Action & Animated Projects

20th Century Fox TV has big plans for Alex Borstein, who voices Lois on the studio's hit animated comedy Family Guy. The actress-writer has signed a deal with the studio todevelop, write and executive produce two comedy projects that she would potentially star in -- one animated and one live-action. Additionally, 20th TV has signed a talent holding deal with Borstein so other writers would be developing for her too, and she could be cast in an existing project. Borstein has been in the Fox family for the past 13 years -- as a writer-performer on the network's late-night sketch comedy Mad TV where she created such memorable characters as Miss Swan, and as a key cast member on the 20th/Fox comedy Family Guy, on which she also served as a writer-producer. She also did a variety show with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, which aired on Fox as a special.
20th TV chairman Gary Newman noted that studios sometime miss gems they have in their backyard while looking on the other side of the fence for the proverbial greener grass, but he and fellow chairman Dana Walden didn't want that to happen with Borstein, whom he called "a remarkably gifted person." "What I love about her is that she brings a persona and an attitude," something that distinguishes the leads of the great comedies of the last 20 years such as Roseanne, Seinfeld ... Read More »

Drake Returns To Hottest MCs In The Game List At #4!

Drizzy delivered on his debut and was a staple on radio in 2010.By Paul Cantor

Drake

Photo: Getty Images

In 2009, Drake dropped the instant-classic mixtape So Far Gone (which sold upward of 70,000 units its first week when it was released as an EP last September) and appeared on songs with Jay-Z, Fabolous and Mary J. Blige, among others. He was the industry's new "it" guy, nominated for two Grammys after only a mixtape. His clout was reflected on last year's Hottest MCs in the Game list, with the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust ranking him #3. What more did Aubrey Graham really have to do?

Well, for one, he needed to drop an actual album to prove he was more than just a fly-by-night sensation. He also needed to hit the road and show he was a dynamic performing artist who could fill an arena. And, finally, he needed to make up for some past flubs like the poorly received "Best I Ever Had" video. He did all that and more this year, which led the Brain Trust to vote him the #4 Hottest MC in the Game of 2010.
Drake was a staple on radio all year, whether it was "Bedrock" with Young Money, "Money to Blow" with Baby and Lil Wayne, "Forever" with Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, or any one of the songs from So Far Gone that stayed in rotation.
"He's been on the radio all year," RapFix editor Hillary Crosley said during the Hottest MCs roundtable. "Like, I can't get away from him. It's impossible."
"Different artists, they may have a hot regional presence or be hot on the East Coast or Down South around Atlanta or whatever," added MTV News supervising producer Sean Lee, "but this dude — everywhere, man."
Sure, there are artists who might be big on the radio, but few do it as whimsically as Drake does. To wit, his Thank Me Later singles were all creative stretches. "Find Your Love" was an R&B single that found Mr. Graham not rapping, but crooning over a rich piano line and lo-fi electro blips. "Over" saw him spitting feverishly against staccato drums and questioning his newfound fame. And "Fancy" was a gentlemanly nod of female appreciation — not something rappers are typically wont to do. Reception to these songs was overwhelmingly positive, leading Thank Me Later to move 447,000 units its first week, and it's closing in on platinum status.
But Drake also made his presence felt perhaps in the most important arena of the modern music business: performing. Aside from staging the October's Very Own festival in Toronto this past August (where Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Eminem and Jay-Z made appearances), but he also hit the road for his Light Dreams & Nightmares Tour. And what's more, he was the guy Eminem and Jay-Z brought out at their Home and Home concert series this past September. Yeah, the big dogs really get down with Drake like that.
"You got the biggest-selling artist of the past 10 years, Eminem, who brings out Drake to hype up the crowd at the Home and Home Tour," Sway said, acknowledging just how powerful of a statement that move was.
That said, the roundtable wasn't in agreement that Drake really had the performance component of his career down just yet. In fact, during the taping, Drake was actually voted #3 on the Hottest MCs list but was then demoted by Kanye West, who the Brain Trust felt brought more to the table as an artist.
"You know what Kanye does that Drake doesn't? He reminds you of what a full package is," MTV Jams' Sheila Grullon said.
MTV News senior producer Rahman Dukes replied: "What's missing from the Drake package?"
"He's missing charisma," MTV Jams' Tuma Basa said. "He's missing drama."
MTV News senior writer Jayson Rodriguez put the battle between the two in context of what type of attention each artist gets. "Kanye is attracting the world's attention," he said. "Whereas Drake isn't there yet. He's building that up."
In a vote, Kanye beat out Drake for the #3 slot. But still, give credit where it's due: Drake won an ASCAP Award for Rap Song of the Year ("Forever"), a BMI Award for Most Performed Urban Song of the Year ("Best I Ever Had"), Best Male Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards and New Artist of the Year at the Juno Awards. He also graced the covers of XXL, Vibe, Complex and Billboard and even had his very own MTV documentary, "Better Than Good Enough." He's come a long way since "Degrassi."
The 2010 Hottest MCs in the Game rollout is now complete! As in 2008 and 2009, the criteria is based on a combination of rhyme skill, flow, buzz, commercial success, business ventures, Web presence and cultural influence. Upload your comments, reactions, arguments and/or your own list to Your.MTV.com or send tweets with the hashtag #hottestmcs — the best responses could be on TV or our hip-hop blog, RapFix! Katy Perry and Russell Brand have officially tied the knot, getting married in India on Saturday night (October 23).
"Russell Brand and Katy Perry are overjoyed to confirm that they were pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Brand on Saturday, October 23," the couple said in a statement sent to MTV News. "The very private and spiritual ceremony, attended by the couples' closest family and friends, was performed by a Christian minister and longtime friend of the Hudson Family [Katy's maiden name]. The backdrop was the inspirational and majestic countryside of Northern India."
The singer and the comedian married in a ceremony attended by their friends and family, who had been spotted landing in India with the pair earlier in the week. According to The Associated Press, the ceremony began at 5 p.m. Local time when workers at the wildlife sanctuary near Ranthambore were asked to leave the venue and clear the fields. One worker told People, "I hadn't even finished the lighting I had been told to do. They just told us to get out fast."
The magazine reported that traditional Indian instruments were played and Rajasthani folk musicians sang at the Aman-i-Khas resort. Additionally, sacred Vedic chanting was heard as well as the sound of applause and cheering from the wedding guests.
The wedding ceremony wrapped up days of celebrations. On Friday night, the couple and their guests celebrated with a Bollywood-themed bash.
Perry and Brand were engaged last New Year's Eve in India. Just last week, Brand sat down with MTV's "The Seven," where he joked that the wedding would take place in the "distant past" — in Victorian London — before noting that the big day "will be quite soon." And while the two had yet to officially say their "I do's," Brand insisted, "Marriage takes place in the heart. So in that sense, we are already married."

To say 2010 is Lady Antebellum's year would be an understatement. The trio kicked things off in January with the release of their sophomore album, 'Need You Now,' and a Grammy win for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group under their belt. The nominations continued, as the band have five nods at both the CMA Awards and American Music Awards next month -- tying them with the number of nods Eminem received for the latter awards show.

The Boot chatted with Lady A's Hillary Scott, Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley at their recent benefit performance in New York about success, songwriting (they've already begun penning a follow up to 'Need You Now') and why you should put that phone down at "a quarter after one."

How is your first headlining tour going so far?

The roots of the Todd Seavey C-SPAN rant: Did lovelorn libertarian plot panel-discussion revenge against ex? And where'd his blog go?

Libertarian blogger Todd Seavey beefing with his ex, live on C-SPAN. (C-SPAN) Todd Seavey blindsided everyone, especially ex-girlfriend Helen Rittelmeyer, when he ripped into her during a panel discussion on C-SPAN2. But no surprise, really: The blogger has been living out loud -- the good, the bad, the breakups -- for years. The 40-something libertarian posted a super-exacting personal ad on his blog in 2007 ("Is your IQ, if it has been tested, significantly above average?") A year later, he announced to readers that Rittelmeyer was his new girlfriend: "Obscenely young, wise-beyond-her-years, conservative, blogging, Catholic, New Wave-loving, monster-movie-viewing, Southern-extracted, Yale-educated, technically-libertarian person." They bickered, broke up and reconciled -- all chronicled on his blog. (The postings have disappeared from his site, but live forever via Google cache.) James Otto Presented With a Special Purple Heart

Filed under: Exclusive, Country News, Songs

James Otto still sounds very humbled and more than a bit shocked that a U.S. Marine gave him his Purple Heart medal. The Purple Heart, of course, is awarded in the name of the President to those injured or killed in service.

It all started on October 15 when James saw the Marine, with whom he's spoken with before, at his Dallas show. When the two last met, James invited him on his tour bus to chat.

"He was really moved by the song 'In Color' and he had given me his POW hat with his Iraq campaign medal and his Afghanistan campaign medal," James tells The Boot of the serviceman who prefers to remain anonymous. "He had been wounded and a prisoner-of-war for 18 months. People don't really realize how many guys out there have been wounded or taken hostage and been through those nightmares."

Jaron and the Long Road to Love, 'That's Beautiful to Me' -- Story Behind the Lyrics

Filed under: Exclusive, Story Behind the Song

Jaron of Jaron and the Long Road to Love sat down with The Boot to talk about the inspiration for his second country single, 'That's Beautiful to Me.''

My ex-girlfriend, when we first started going out, everything she did was so cute. No matter what, whatever she did, I found it adorable. Then after a while, you hit that wall and everything she does becomes annoying. But I stuck around long enough that it became beautiful again.

All the things in a relationship that we can look at and see as annoying, I look at it as quirky and beautiful. The fact that she has 46 pillows on the bed, I mean, it's a pain. She bothers you, she badgers you, she wants to get a dog and you say, "No problem." We go down to the rescue, we want to rescue a dog. And you're like, "Yeah, we can do that. I support that." And she [says], "Oh, I couldn't decide. I had to get all three." That's a very common thing. You could look at it as annoying, or you could say that's actually somebody who's beautiful.

Kanye West Reveals Challenges Of Directing 'Runaway'

'I had a number of concerns: Is it realistic? Are we getting a good angle?' first-time director tells MTV News.By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Kanye West made a successful transition from producer to rapper with his seminal debut, The College Dropout. Now, after the MTV premiere of his "Runaway" short film, West said the experience of putting to get the 35-minute visual is comparable to making his first album.
But West said the experience was anything but easy for him.

"Was there any difficult parts?" he said to MTV News' Sway, laughing. "Thinking about dressing all of those people. Or finding where the [phoenix] wings were, who would make the wings. Laying the colors, having to go back and forth. Directing myself, 'cause I can make awesome decisions right there. But when I stand on that piano [in the 'Runaway' scene], I got to make sure Kyle, who is an amazing [director of photography] on this, I got to trust him that he caught that shot the proper way. So it takes a little bit longer, when you have to go around and get behind the camera. So these shots, I would have to go look at it, do it again, look at it again. I had a number of concerns: Is it realistic? Are we getting a good angle? We didn't have Hype Williams-level lighting in that warehouse."
Despite the challenges, West put together a moving piece of art that has garnered rave reviews from his peers and fans alike.
Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz called the project "artistically large." "In my opinion, it is the single most ambitious 'music video' of the decade, if you could even put it in the category of a 'music video,' " he told MTV News in an e-mail message earlier this week. "It reminds me of when I was younger, and no matter what Michael Jackson had done last, the next thing [he did] not only topped it, but completely raised the bar beyond what anyone else was capable of."
Swizz Beatz was also effusive in his praise for West. The producer didn't dole out a perfect score to his fellow musician, holding back a higher rating only because he hoped for a longer experience. "On a 1 to 10, it was a 9," Swizz said. "The reason why it was a 9 was because it should've been longer. It was a deep, deep story, and you have to know Kanye to really understand it."
MTV.com user DontblameYouth gave West more than a perfect score, adding an extra thumb to his praise. "I'm absolutely mesmerized by this video," the commenter wrote. "It really shows how Kanye has worked hard at such an innovative idea to introduce maybe even a new area and way of thinking to the world of art and music. I understand that some people may not be able to grasp or watch it and understand it not as it is literally shown in the video but interpret it and apply it to life. But I give it three thumbs up. Love."

Inside-the-beltway guessing game: who inspired the characters in Nicolle Wallace's novel?

Nicolle Wallace, 2010. (AP/Rogelio V. Solis) "Eighteen Acres" by Nicolle Wallace. (Atria Books) Once again, time to play "Who's Who" in the latest Washington roman a clef: "Eighteen Acres," Nicolle Wallace's savvy novel about heartbreak, drama and drudgery inside the White House complex. The GOP insider (Wallace worked as communications director for George W. Bush and campaign adviser for John McCain and Sarah Palin) spins a tale about the first female president, a moderate Republican from California. "She may be the biggest fantasy in the book," Wallace told us Wednesday. "We may be further away from electing a moderate than we are from electing a woman." The characters are, of course, "entirely fictional" but some are less fictional than others. President Charlotte Kramer is obviously inspired by Hillary Clinton: Wallace genuinely admires Clinton, especially how gracefully she weathered her husband's infidelity as first lady, and assorted indignities during her

Lady Antebellum Talk Dating, Drunk Dialing and Dylan

To say 2010 is Lady Antebellum's year would be an understatement. The trio kicked things off in January with the release of their sophomore album, 'Need You Now,' and a Grammy win for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group under their belt. The nominations continued, as the band has five nods at both the CMA Awards and American Music Awards next month -- tying them with the number of nods Eminem received for the latter awards show.

Hillary: It's great. It's a lot more responsibility than I think you realize until you start embarking on it and making all these decisions. It makes us appreciate the people we've opened for over the years a lot more. You just have to think about every little thing from what people are eating to the set list. Everything. It runs the gamut.

Cadillac Sky Lead Singer Leaves Band

Filed under: Americana, Bluegrass, Country NewsFort Wort band Cadillac Sky's lead singer and mandolin player, Bryan Simpson has announced his departure from the band after eight years. He will be replaced by Georgia folk singer Levi Lowery, who plays for Southern Ground Records, and has been a fan and friend of the band for several years.

Bryan's decision to leave the Nashville-by-way-of-Texas-based bluegrass quintet was based on religious reasons that grew from "a relentless stirring in his soul" over the past year.

"Three years ago, I would have never imagined this day anywhere in my near future," says Bryan. "But that was before Jesus Christ turned my life upside down and made me forever His in the spring of 2008. Since then He has continued to devour my life and everything in it. Daily, my desire for Him grows. The longing for more time spent in complete devotion to Him, combined with a desire to be more mobile in my faith has led me to this decision."

Bryan asks in his written statement for the understanding of "his great family of fans."
