Read this: Virginia professor explores slave-mistress life in new book

Dolen Perkins-Valdez (Mark Gail/The Washington Post) When Dolen Perkins-Valdez read a passing reference in a history book to an Ohio resort ("Tawawa House") where slaveholders would take their slave mistresses for vacations, she was blown away. "I didn't know what to do with that," she tells our colleague Lonnae O'Neal Parker. Well, actually, she did: The University of Mary Washington professor has written a novel, "Wench," that explores the complexities and utter weirdness of that scenario.
