CBS Evening News executive producer Rick Kaplan announced in an afternoon meeting that Thursday would be his last day with the broadcast and with CBS News, departing even before the show's anchor, Katie Couric. NYT / Media Decoder: Kaplan rejoined CBS four years ago to run Couric's newscast. He had first worked there in the 1970s when Walter Cronkite was the Evening News anchor. He spent most of the 1980s and 1990s in senior producer positions at ABC News, and later became the president of both CNN/U.S. (from 1997-2000) and MSNBC (from 2004-2006).

Time Inc. is parting ways with another executive hired during the brief reign of Jack Griffin, who was ousted in February after about five months in the post. This time it's John Q. Griffin, the former National Geographic executive recruited in December to be executive vice president and president of the newly created news group, comprising Time, Fortune, Money, and Life. paidContent: Griffin's exit comes one day after Time Inc. said it had hired News Corp. digital business development executive Perry Solomon in a similar role. NY Post: The Griffins have left the building. Adweek: His departure follows those of Peter Kreisky and Randall Rothenberg, other Jack Griffin hires who also left in the wake of his firing after five months. It could have cost Time Inc. more than $2 million to pay out the rest of his contract, given industry standards for executive pay at that level.
